JUGIAL
As of 2001 India census,[1] Jugial had a population of 16,664. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Jugial has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 76%. In Jugial, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Jugial lies 13 km north of Pathankot and 6 km east of Madhopur,it lies near Shapurkandi village, which is the last town of Punjab, before entering the state of Jammu and Kashmir while traveling on Amritsar-Jammu National Highway. Jugial is situated on the road to the Ranjit Sagar Dam Project fromPathankot, Punjab. While, Ranjit Sagar Dam Project is further 15 km from Jugial, various fabrication unit & other workshops and the staff colony of the project is located in the land adjoining Jugial.
JUGIAL TOURISM PLACE:
- Shahpurkandi fort is located 20 km (approximately) from Pathankot City. It was built in 1505 A.D. by a Rajput chief by the name of Jaspal Singh Pathania. It was strategically located to have control over the Kangra and Nurpur region. The fort is in ruins today, and it is famous for its temples and the view it commands over the Ravi riverPathankot city is surrounded by both the Shivalik range, part of which makes up the foothills of the Himalayas, and the river Chakki. Places worth visiting near Pathankot include Shahpur Kandi with a hanging rest house, Ranjit Sagar Dam which is the highest gravity dam in Asia. Madhopur (Madhopur, Punjab) head works which date back to the Mughal era. head works of Upper Bari Doab, Shahpur Kandi are the attractions of this area. Another place of interest could be Keshopur Chhambwhich is home to many Migratory Birds
- Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple (मुक्तेश्वर महादेव मंदिर), also known as Mukesaran Mandir, is a popular shrine of Lord Shiva and is situated 25 km from Pathankot City in Village Doong, on the bank of the Ravi River. These caves are on the way to Shahpur Kandi. It is the holy temple of the Hindu religion, where the idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Bramha, Lord Vishnu, Lord Hanuman, and Goddess Parvati are present. This temple is considered one of the most sacred places around Pathankot. There are some caves which purportedly date to the time of the Mahabharata. According to legend, the Pandavas stayed in those caves for a night during their exile (Agayatwas). This temple is said to be 5,500 years old, dating it to the time of Mahabharata
- Also seek to visit Jugial Township, which is located 15 km (approx) from Pathankot. This place has greenery all around and one Shri Laxmi Narayan Mandir which is the biggest among the nearby areas.
- RANJIT SAGAR DAM PROJECT, SHAHPURKANDI (600 MW):
The earliest recorded proposal of storage on the river Ravi was mooted in 1912 for a 200 ft . high Dam near village Thein. It was inspected by committee headed by Mr. Willey in 1926-27 who had recommended to carry out the survey of the area, but up till 1954 nothing substantial was done except inspections by Geologists. It was in 1957 that the proposal of storage Dam on Ravi River materialized into an Irrigation scheme. The power generation aspect was then postponed to a future date. The first multipurpose project report was submitted to Government of India in 1964. Finally the project was accorded approval by Government of India in April 1982.
Ranjit Sagar Dam (Thein Dam) Project is one of the largest multipurpose river valley project on the river Ravi about 24 KMs up-stream of Madhopur Head Works. It houses four generating units of 150 MW each with total installed capacity of 600 MW. It has firm power of 162 MW at 100% load factor. 4.6% of energy generated is supplied free of cost to H.P. and 20% of energy generated is to be supplied to J&K at the generated cost at the Bus Bar. The Project has been conceived as a peaking station. The power generated is being fed into the existing 220 KV Grid substation at Sarna. - __________________________________________________________________________________________
